Missionaries to the Tribes
The Miskito Tribe
The Miskito tribe is an indigenous group living in La Moskitia (Mosquitia), the jungle-rainforest of Eastern Honduras and Northeastern Nicaragua. A large tribe, it is estimated that in total there are approximately 29,000 Miskito people, however the tribe is scattered throughout jungle terrain and loosely organized. The Miskito people have long been left alone, however during the colonial period the British controlled la Moskitia, and counted the Miskito people as their subjects.
In Honduras there are villages of Miskito along the major artery, the Rio Patuca, with Wamsuirpe and Ahuas being the largest. This is the more traveled area due to the relative ease of entering, when compared with the Rio Platano biosphere. For His Kingdom, however, works with the tribes along the Rio Platano, where it is estimated that more than 2,000 Miskito live. The main village is Las Marias, where evangelism is still needed and is a primary focus of the mission.
Additionally, traveling into the interior of La Moskitia off of the Rio Platano to the unreached villages to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ is also critical. In the interior there are typically groups of three to ten thatch-roofed huts in a circle off unknown trails, many of which remain unreached.
A secondary focus of the ministry to the Miskito people is to take medicine and clinical help to Las Marias, and eventually beyond. The jungle breeds many types of illnesses, and medicine for the small, dilapidated clinic in Las Marias is a critical need, as travel to a slightly better clinic at the mouth of the river takes 6+ hours. In summary, the mission to the Miskito is first and foremost evangelism of both the village of Las Marias and the interior jungle, and secondarily to help the Miskito along the Rio Platano medically.
